What we do

Our work with offenders runs from advising the courts on sentencing through to supervising offenders released on licence.

Court work
Our Courts Duty Officer prepare pre-sentence reports on specific offenders for magistrates and judges. This involves an individual assessment followed by recommendations as to the most appropriate punishment and treatment programme.

Victim liaison
Our Victim Liaison Officers offer support to victims of crime. We also have a Women's Safety Officer who works specifically with victims of domestic violence.

Community Payback
Offenders may be sentenced to up to 300 hours of unpaid work that benefits the community. Probation staff organise and manage Community Payback projects across the county.

Supervision and risk-assessment
Probation staff have regular meetings with individual offenders to support them through the process towards rehabilitation and to monitor their current state of mind and risk to themselves and others.

Changing behaviour
Hertfordshire Probation offers 12 different treatment programmes, such as enabling offenders to think more clearly about their actions.

Employment, Training and Education
Evidence shows that having a job significantly reduces the risk of offenders continuing to commit crime. Hertfordshire Probation's ETE team works to increase offenders' basic skills, including reading and writing, and supports them in finding a job.

Resettlement of prisoners
Some Probation staff are based at the Mount Prison, where they work with offenders to help prepare them for release, for instance in helping them to find a job and a home, so they are less likely to reoffend

Protecting the public from more dangerous offenders
A key aspect of this is our Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements, or MAPPA for short. The MAPP Arrangements are set up between Probation Police, Prison and other relevant agencies and are designed to ensure the agencies monitor the more dangerous offenders following release from prison.
