MP meets probation officers at Watford |
Watford MP Richard Harrington learned about life on the front line for probation officers when he visited Hertfordshire Probation Trust on Thursday 7 October.
Staff at the trust met the MP at their Watford centre, where they briefed him about the work they undertake with offenders to reduce the likelihood of reoffending and to protect the public.
They also took Mr Harrington to meet offenders working on a Community Payback project at Beechen Grove Baptist Church, Watford, where they have been working on and off for three years, mainly painting and decorating and weeding the grounds.
Chief Executive Tessa Webb hosted the visit together with Board Chair Delbert Sandiford.
Tessa Webb said afterwards: "We were delighted to welcome Mr Harrington and talk to him about the complex and challenging work carried out by our experienced and highly-trained officers in supervising offenders.
"We also said how keen we were to work with local employers. Many people lose their jobs when they are convicted of a crime, particularly if they are sent to prison. We have many highly-motivated ex-offenders just itching for the opportunity to get back into mainstream work."
Tessa added: "After the meeting at the office, we took Mr Harrington to see one of our many Community Payback projects. These are designed to punish offenders while at the same time giving them the opportunity to learn the value of doing positive work that benefits other people.
"Our supervisors ensure that the work is tough and challenging and that offenders work hard throughout the day."
Richard Harrington said: "I was delighted to visit this Trust and see first-hand the invaluable work done with offenders and the local community.
"I was very impressed with everything I saw and with the dedication of the the Board and staff of the Trust. As MP I will be doing all I can to support and promote the Trust and its work."
