High Sheriff meets Community Payback offenders |
Lord Charles Cecil, High Sheriff of Hertfordshire, and his wife, Lady Charles, were in Hoddesdon, on Friday 1 July, meeting offenders on Community Payback at Hoddesdon Cricket Club.
The High Sheriff was seeing for himself some of the day-to-day work of Hertfordshire Probation Trust, which manages offenders sentenced to punishment in the community.
The Community Payback punishment is designed to ensure the community is recompensed for the crime, and last year Hertfordshire benefitted from more than 125,000 hours of unpaid work through Community Payback.
The work at the cricket club in Hoddesdon included strimming the overgrown vegetation and painting the club hut.
Earlier in the day Lord and Lady Charles had met a group of cross-grade probation staff at the trust's Hertford HQ to learn about the range of work they do to protect the public and reduce reoffending.
The High Sheriff said afterwards: "We have been very impressed by the work of the Probation Trust in Hertfordshire. The staff show not only great knowledge and skill but also impressive commitment. I know how important the probation trust's work is in the prevention of reoffending and through their work with the other key agencies and organisations in the statutory and voluntary sectors."
Hertfordshire Probation's Chief Executive Tessa Webb said: "We were delighted to explain to Lord and Lady Charles the work we do in Probation and to show the very positive contribution that offenders can make to the community in carrying out a punishment of unpaid work. We really appreciate their engagement."
