Probation works

The National Probation Service (Hertfordshire) has a number of key areas of work:

The work of all probation areas is closely monitored by the National Probation Directorate. Each year we are set targets for areas of our work and these are regularly checked to ensure they are met or action taken to address problems.  You can see full details of our targets and performance in our annual report.

Each year we:

  • Supervise almost 2200 community orders
  • Write 2950 pre sentence reports
  • Work with 185 victims
  • Help 50 offenders to find employment
  • Run offending behaviour programmes for over 200 offenders
  • Supervise 368 offenders on licence
  • Help over 100 offenders to achieve literacy and numeracy qualifications
  • Monitor over 200 offenders that could potentially be dangerous to the public

In addition, the offenders that we supervise on unpaid work projects carry out over 60,000 hours of work in Hertfordshire each year.  The work is carried out in schools, elderly persons homes, community centres, places of worship and for charity projects.

This is valued at around £300,000 of free labour that benefits the community.

We employ around 250 staff in a variety of roles including:

  • Probation Officers
  • Probation Services Officers
  • Victim Liaison Officers
  • Treatment Managers
  • Unpaid Work Supervisors.

We also employ support staff in:

  • administration
  • human resources (training)
  • finance
  • information and research
  • communications
  • management.

We aim to take account of the diverse needs of both the offenders that we supervise and the staff that we employ.

We also second staff to work with Partner agencies including HM Prison Service, Police and Youth Offending Teams.
